Phlebotomist Full Time

Summary

Phlebotomists are health care professionals who have been trained to collect patient’s blood specimens by venipuncture and by micro collection techniques.

 Duties And Responsibilities

1. 1. Performing the work which is assigned, ensuring that it meets all standards as required by ISO        15189: 2012.
2. 2. Identifies the patient – comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient’s identification before venipuncture is performed.
3. 3. Performs venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently.
4. 4. Must have the complete knowledge about which color top tube to use and the volume of blood needed – knows test requirements, assists in Clinical Laboratory as needed.
5. 5. Responsibilities include bleeding time tests, blood cultures, blood samples collection and look after the blood collection room requirements and maintain the cleanliness and decorum the blood collection rooms.

General Responsibilities:       

1. 1. Work in all shifts as scheduled by the Head of Department.
2. 2. Strictly adheres to organization’s regulations and policies especially those related to infection control, patient safety, OSHAD, DOH, JCI and ISO.
3. 3. Supports Continuous Quality Improvement and participates and contributes to all the quality assurance activities of the service.
4. 4. Participates and contributes in scheduled in-service training programs.
5. 5. Exercises effective interpersonal skills in dealings with department staff, associates  and Management.
6. 6. Maintains confidentiality as per the agreement signed.
7. 7. Demonstrates the ability to listen to others in promoting effective communication.
8. 8. Develops thorough understanding of policies and procedures of the hospital and   demonstrates respect for them.
9. 9. Carries out other duties when requested by the Head of department.

General OSH Responsibilities, Authority and accountabilities of the position includes:

1. 1. 1. Familiarize themselves and comply with all OSH and Infection Control policies, standards  and procedures that are relevant for their workplace
2. 1. 2. Work in accordance with the documented occupational, safety and health procedures and instructions, specific responsibilities defined in individual procedures and instructions.
3. 1. 3. Use of appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems and follow safe working procedures
4. 1. 4. Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures
      5. Not willfully or recklessly endanger anyone’s health and safety. Take reasonable care for the health and safety of persons that may be affected by the employee’s acts or  omissions at the workplace.
5. 1. 6. Assist with the preparation of risk assessments
      7. Attend applicable departmental safety training and follow OSHMS policies and procedures.
6. 1. 8. Take reasonable care of their own health and safety
      9. Cooperate with their employer with respect to any action taken by the employer to comply with OSHMS requirements.
7. 1. 10. Notify supervisor or Department Safety facilitator of any hazards, health and safety mishaps or incidents within or outside their area of work.

Task Specific OSH Responsibilities, Authority and accountabilities of the position includes:

1. 1. 11. Proper collection, Storage and disposal of needle, sharps and hazardous materials as per NMCSH Waste management policy
2. 1. 12. Must be familiar with the concept of hazard and bio hazardous materials, safe handling of bio hazardous materials present in the working section.
3. 1. 13. Must be familiar with ergonomic, sharps and biological hazards in work area and how to  handle them.
4. 1. 14. Should be familiar with MSDS to determine health hazards, and routes of exposures for chemicals
5. 1. 15.  Know the CODE Brown policy and other applicable laboratory policies and procedures

Qualification, Licensure, Education, Experience, Special Skills

1. 1. Certificate of training in an approved Phlebotomy program or Diploma (1 year) Medical Laboratory Technology or Degree in any health-related field.
2. 2. Minimum of one (1) year practical experience as Phlebotomist in a reputed Medical Laboratory.
3. 3. Currently licensed in country of origin and with DOH license to practice in Abu Dhabi UAE.
4. 4. Fluent in spoken & written English, Arabic language is desirable, but not essential.
5. 5. Ability to learn and handle automation & IT programs is desirable but not essential.
