Position Overview

Reporting to the Communications Supervisor, you will be responsible for maintaining and refurbishing all the components of the Communications system and associated wayside instrument equipment that is owned by our business. This work will include small installations and respond to breakdowns when required.

Roles and Responsibility

· Ensuring that equipment is maintained and calibrated to data sheets and/or manufacturer specifications,

· Working in a professional and safe manner to ensure the maximum protection to oneself, co-workers and plant equipment and ensuring compliance to all relevant legislation,

· Minimizing maintenance costs through the diligent and effective use of company materials as well as by being innovative,

· Carries out maintenance and repair on all communications systems, subsystems and accessories. Ensures those systems/equipment are brought back to original specifications and work carried out to a high standard.

· Executes planned routine maintenance as per laid down procedures and schedules and prepares reports on completed work.

· Organises workshop activities, keeps history records of all equipment and ensures that test equipment are in good working condition. Ensures that tools and consumables are available at all times. Prepares status reports and requirement to line supervisor.

· Assists and participates in the installation of new systems/equipment including participation in commissioning. Supervises and directs contracted maintenance technicians.

· Liaises with supervisor on more complicated problems/anomalies and discusses solutions/seeks advice. Reviews end-users requirements, co-ordinates schedules and work execution programs and prepares actions/recommendations to line supervisor.

· Follows up and keeps records of equipment dispatch and received from Vendors after repairs. Follows up status of spares stock and prepares requirements to supervisor. Inspects received equipment and ensures correct consignments are received. Prepares discrepancy reports to line supervisor.

· Prepares work permits and generally ensures that work carried out in safe and orderly manners as per laid down procedures.

· Responsible for the support of Company Safety, environment and Quality policies and programs, and carrying out specific duties and responsibilities related to his job as spelled out in Management system documentation, policies, procedures, local documentation, Management System Manual, Safety Manual and other related documents.

· Undertakes similar and related tasks and duties as directed by Supervisor.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

Academic Qualifications:

· High School certificate or equivalent

Professional Qualifications:

• Driver License (Car and Heavy Vehicle)
• Basic experience and qualification of electrical works (Professional)

Experience:

· Proven experience in communications systems

Other Skills:

• English as first language or advanced level of written and verbal skill
• Basic knowledge of SAP Maintenance module
• Full driving license
• Knowledge of GSM-R radio system
• Good planning skills
• Analytical skills for problem solving
• Experience in writing company reports
• Ability to work with people from a broad cross section.
• Recognized training qualification.
